[Jul. 13th, 2009|07:05 pm] |
New arrivals: | MILANESE - Lockout - 2x12" (Planet Mu)
A selection of tracks from the long awaited new full length by Milanese, this 2x12" shows that this british producer has chosen to keep the vocals and syncopated rhythms from his debut but tone down the noise level and dubstep structures, to come up with something which, while still dubstep at times, has a stronger weird, anthemic hip hop vibe. While it all stays quite dark and rusty, such a track as the ones with South Africa's Ben Sharpa or the Al Haca remix are somewhat less bombastic than Milanese's debut, but catchier and more detailled. I was expecting a lot and wasn't disappointed: recommended.

| KING MIDAS SOUND - Dub Heavy - Hearts & Ghosts - 12" (Hyperdub)
Very cool (and nicely packaged) second 12" for King Midas Sound, a new duo lead by Kevin Martins (The Bug / Techno Animal). A lot calmer than The Bug, grittier and less dancefloor-oriented, the dubby, dark and low-key tracks on this record could appear as a nod towards the late 90's illbient sound (think of the Wordsound label, for example) and both a welcome and surprising departure from the more formated and straight-forward electronic dancehall. Pretty and seducing.
|
| COOLY G - Narst / Love Dub - 12" (Hyperdub)
Clubby but very soft, the first 12" by Cooly G has been pushed quite strongly by Hyperdub and distantiates itself a bit from the playful but often dark releases on this label. With her debut, Cooly G delivers on the A side something of a dubstep-meets-house ballad, all very mild, melodic and quite straight. The B side worked better on me: instrumental, relying on a long, cinematic melody and slightly stronger beats. Let's see where Cooly G goes after this one.
|
| WISP - The Shimmering Hour - 2x12" (Rephlex)
After a long pause, probably due to the demise of Sublight, Wisp's third album finally sees the light of the day on the prestigious Rephlex. Things haven't changed much, and Reid Dunn's new album fits like a glove on this label, with its very playful IDM trickery, its post d'n'b breaks and its super hectic bleeps and blips. The album gets a bit more melancholic and straightforward towards its end, with long pads that balance the earlier electronic beats. All in all a good follow-up to Wisp's earlier efforts, and something which should gather the same kind of response.
|
| HARMONIC 313 - Battlestar - 12" (Warp)
Single 12" for one of many excellent tunes off Harmonic 313's "When Machines Exceed Human Intelligence". Enriched with the voices of Phat Kat and Elzhi, Harmonic's combination of intelligent hip hop, dubstep tones and 8 bit ends up being extremely driving, catchy and challenging (besides reminding quite often of Mad EP's works on his "Bass.hed" album). Each version is presented in its regular and instrumental cases. A great track and an excellent record for people who had missed the vinyl version of the album.
|
| CLARK - Totems Flare - CD (Warp)
If Chris Clark's previous album, the hard and pummelling "Turning Dragons" was a very coherent effort, this new "Totems Flare" is more of the "anything goes" kind, and even more so than the previous "Growls Garden" EP. There are some heavy beats here, but also some Boards Of Canada-esque moments, some high definition sounds, but also some 8 Bit moments, some dancefloor numbers, and some extremely abstract ones. The grittiness and weight typical of Clark since the last album is still there, though, and while this album is considerably less o a frontal assault as the previous one, it is something that might (and will) grow with every listen.

|
| PINCH & MOVING NINJA / PEVERELIST - False Flag / Junktion (Shed Remix) - 12" (Tectonic)
Fourth instalment of Tectonic's high profile split 12", and probably the furthest so far from classic dubstep. The A side, co-written by Pinch and Moving Ninja, is a somber and menacing slow moving downtempo track, quite dark and brooding. On the flipside, Berlin's techno producer Shed turns the Peverelist original into a very gentle, flowing and clicky home-listening tune. The whole thing is quite chilled out but very pleasant, and works well on all accounts. A very solid record that shows well the progresses of all the involved parties.
|
| 2562 - Love In Outer Space / Third Wave - 12" (Tectonic)
First solo 2562 record for 2009. The title track is a strong, syncopated and deep mixture of dub techno and dubstep feelings as Dave Huismans has been delivering for some time now, while the B side, with straight kick drums and beats is something which should work better on techno dancefloor than in dubstep basements. The production is flawless, as usual, as 2562 keeps on spearheading the marriage of both genres.
|
| V/A - Tectonic Plates volume 2 - 2xCD (Tectonic)
Follow-up to 2006's remarked first Tectonic double CD compilation, following the same guidelines: the first CD is a label compilation, presenting 12 tracks which had so far been available on vinyl only, and the second is a long DJ mix by Pinch (Tectonic's founder). With excellent material by Flying Lotus, Joker, Skream and the like, the 1st CD shows how most of these acts have shed their former dubstep clothes and integrated a strong influence from Berlin's dub techno sound. The DJ mix itself, full of unreleased tracks, has a bit more weight and bass. All in all an excellent snapshot of what this leading dubstep label is heading to.
|
| F - Epilogue - 12" (7even)
The title track on this new F single could easily have come out of the Chain Reacion / Basic Channel vault, wasn't it for a slightly more polished and less gritty feeling. Otherwise, the deep, echoed pads and the contained beats of this "Epilogue" clearly remind of the gold days of dub techno. Things get a litle heavier and a little more broken with the dubstep-ish remix by Ramadanman on the B side. All in all a quite low-key, clean and simply put very pretty record.
|
| O-DESSA - Deeper - 12" (Lo Dubs)
Strong debut by this british act on the never disappointing Lo-Dubs. Charming melodies and long vocal samples are intertwined with a balanced yet classic dubstep structure, forming relatively accessible but driving tracks. The tempo is on the high end but things are kept very contained, which in the end result in a record very easy on the ears and with a good dancefloor appeal.
|
| DISTANCE / BENGA / CYRUS - Choke Hold / Surrender - 12" (Chestplate)
Distance gets some help from Benga and Cyrus for the sixth installment on his Chestplate label, delivering one track written with each of them. It's Distance, so don't expect too much subtilty here, but an acute sense for what brings people on the dancefloor. The track with Benga is a mammoth-like monster of overcompressed syncopated bass, enriched with some nice little details and shorter sounds. The Cyrus track, marginally lighter, features drier and more percussive tones, for an equally efficient result. While finesse might not be the masterword here, it's not what people should expect, and this record might very well be the best Chestplate 12" so far.
|
| MRK1 - Feel Loved / Frank - 12" (Contagious Recordings)
Another sure hit by Mark One on his Contagious label. "Feel Loved" builds nicely and features a bit more melodies than usual, but still rely on a heavy beat and bass, MRK1-style. On the B side, "Frank" is a longer than usual number, and quite the heavy hitter, with a classic but deadly efficient bassline. MRK1 doesn't reinvent the wheel here, but he decidedly masters his craft.
|
| MODE - Skam - 12" (Dark Circles)
No, this doesn't seem to be an hommage to Skam, the label. And still, Mode signs an interesting second record on Dark Circle, with three relatively heavy dubstep track which however move at an uncommon speed and feature the same kind of techno drive that one can find on 7even, for example. The title track is a solid hybrid of genre, and should provide a good bridge for people who intend on linking regular, heavy dubstep with the more flowing kind. Not bad.
|
| CURRENT VALUE & RODELL - Sparse Land - 12" (Substrakt)
Very cool four tracker by Current Value and Rodell (the founder of the Subtrakt label). As usual with Current Value, the production level is very high, the tracks club-friendly and the sounds quite futuristic. Quite mid-paced and melodic, these d'n'b numbers border on dubstep from times to times, and should work well in both environments. Add to this a good remix by Cooh's Balkansky side-project, and you get quite a strong but original record from Current Value.
|
| GEMMY & WEDGE - Depraved / Word Perfect - 12" (M4)
Cool first release for the Bristol-based M4 label, coming on the tail of Gemmy's record for Planet Mu. The A side is a menacing and dark dubstep number revolving around a rather classic but efficient structure and co-written with Wedge. The B side comes from Gemmy alone, and is a bit more playful, with a faster tempo and some nice lo-fi melody that could get some positive response on the dancefloor.
|
| OTTO VON SCHIRACH - Bass Low / Bass Galactica 8 - 12" (Basshead)
Über booty from Miami: Otto Von Schirach leaves most of the mash-up / cover business of his "Oozing Bass Spasms" behind and delivers here an infectious and insidious two tracker of twisted Miami-bass inspired material. He's still being faitful to himself, and there's no stopping the madness of the breaks, the care given to the little details and the exaggerated singing, but the whole tracks sound quite a lot more booty than what he has released so far. Bikini-clad female teenage vampires from outer-space beware.
|
Back in stock: | VENETIAN SNARES - Filth - 2x12" (Planet Mu)
There might be some traces of "Detrimentalist"'s acid and rave appeal here and there, but "Filth", Venetian Snares's new high-profile album goes back more to the "Winter In The Belly Of A Snake" or (more recently) "Cavalcade Of Glee" in the way that, as analog as it might be, we're speaking super lush, classical over-broken breakcore here. The tracks are surprisingly varied for Snares (some being dancefloor-oriented, some more funky, and some just plain fiendish). Maybe not as fresh as its predecessor, but obviously more ambitious and somewhat mor enjoyable.
|
| BOXCUTTER - Arecibo Message - 2x12" (Planet Mu)
Nicely brainy and surprisingly IDM-ish third album from Boxcutter. Barry Lynn had already broken away from the dubstep of his debuts with "Glyphic", but this "Aricebo Message" sees him plant his feet even stronger in the weird electronica, semi Rephlex-ish 8bit territory. Less beautiful than before, but more complex and somewhat more rewarding, this album is quite the wild ride (even including some very dubby moments), and confirm that the man is both talented and open minded.
|
| VENETIAN SNARES - Horsey Noises - 12" (Planet Mu)
Very playful new EP from Venetian Snares, following very closely the "Filth" album. The opener and titlte track is a big surprise, as it is a lot closer to his analog semi-pop Last Girl side-project than to the usual Snares material (and I could swear that it recycles a lot of the first Last Step single, "You're a nice girl"). The rest of the record is more up-tempo, very acid at times with quite a venture into chip-tunes and humor with the very nice closing track. Very well done, and for once there's no denying the changes here compared to Snares's past.
|
| MACHINEFABRIEK & AARON MARTIN - Cello Recycling - Cello Drowning - 10" (Type Records)
One of my favorite record of the moment: Machinefabriek pairs up with the cellist Aaron Martin and reworks / reprocesses his long, melancholic tunes into two spread up and pitched down drone-based emotional pieces. While the sticker on the CD comparing this to Godspeed You Black Emperor! might be lying music-wise, it's true that the low-key, sad but somewhat epic atmospheres of this CD remind of the best of post rock. Gritty, very deep and beautiful.
|
| KING CANNIBAL - Virgo / Murder Us - 12" (Ninja Tune)
King Cannibal had made a splash with his very hard début 12" on Ninja Tune, which was, as far as I know, the hardest dubstep to be released on such a high profile label, this following 12" sees this producer moves away from the noise and huge beats, and clothe himself as a producer for the french hip-hop vocals of Face A Face and the berlin local heroes of Jahcoozi. Both tracks are still heavy (but clear), very electro-minded, and quite infectious. And while it doesn't really sound like anything King Cannibal had done so far, it's quite a success, and something which Kevin Martins might want to study.
|
| FLYING LOTUS / JOKER - Glendale Galleria / Untitled_Rsn - 12" (Tectonic)
Excellent third volume of Tectonic's new split series, pairing up Warp's hottest young act, Flying Lotus, with one of the most talked about and highly regarded dubstep guy of the moment, Joker. Both deliver excellent instrumental tracks in a much more downtempo and melodic way as one could have expected. Flying Lotus's side, while still built around his mesmerizing reinterpretation of hip hop, is on par with his "Los Angeles" album, while Joker delivers a slightly more percussive but very charming and efficient side. Recommended.
|
| MARTYN / 2562 - Yet / Kontrol - 12" (Tectonic)
And here comes a record that really makes sense: Martyn and 2562, both dutch and at the forefront of the current meeting point of dubstep and techno get together for a split 12" on Pinch's Tectonic, 2562's first label. Both were in a good day here, with 2562 delivering a rather down tempo but very well produced track (in my opiion one of his best since the "Aerial" album). On the other side, Martyn is (as expected) a tad more techno, but still quite clear, bassy and well done. A strong record on a strong label.
|
| 2562 - Aerial - CD (Tectonic)
Seldom has the geographic location of a musician made so much sense: more or less halfway between the Uk and German, The Hague's 2562 has been at the forefront of the current mix of british dubstep and german minimal techno, and presents here his first full lenght, following three remarkable (and remarked) 12" on Tectonic. Most definitely something to check and take notice of, "Aerial" first oscillates between both genres, before combining them into a clear, precise and very efficient blend that has the heavy side of dubstep and the more contained and clean aspect of minimal. Very good.
|
| SKREAM / BENGA - Trapped In A Dark Bubble / Technocal - 12" (Tectonic)
Interesting split record between two of dubstep's biggest names. While Skream's track is an uncommonly down-tempo, calm and long one, Benga's side features his typical beats and drive (think of "Night"), but with higher sonorities and a funky techno feeling put more in the foreground than the basses. Still, the production is top notch and this record is worth checking out for anybody into these two acts.
|
| SKREAM - Hedd Banger / Percression - 12" (Tectonic)
Skream releases a lot of tracks, but here might be a record that marks a paradigm shift in this producer's output. With one track being a up-tempo, slightly distorted techno-ish track (and therefore Skream taking the same direction as Benga, Komonazmuk, 2562 & co) with a little electro touch and the B side being a more classic dubstep piece that trades the usual Skream anthemic melodies for a much spacier and heavier feeling, this return of Skream to Pinch's Tectonic label is definitely something else than what one knew from him. Time will tell if this change is punctual or not, but this is already a very strong record.
|
| PINCH - Midnight Oil / Joyride - 12" (Tectonic)
Nice and clear new record by Pinch, who has been lately a bit less productive than his fellow heavy hitters of the dubstep scene. Reminding somewhat of Skream's previous 12" on Tectonic, this one also features prominent techno influences and flows over the dubstep tempo and tonalities (which Pinch however has the good idea to keep quite dub). The tempo is slightly higher than normal, some well found effects are thrown in the mix and, in the end, the whole thing sounds quite refreshing and uncommon from this pillar of this scene.

| The emotional burden of song |
[Jul. 6th, 2009|11:49 am] |
from wikipedia's entry on Street Spirit by Radiohead:
Radiohead attributes a great deal of depth to "Street Spirit", beyond the level typically perceived by its audience. Lead singer Thom Yorke said, “ Street Spirit is our purest song, but I didn't write it. It wrote itself. We were just its messengers; its biological catalysts. Its core is a complete mystery to me, and, you know, I wouldn't ever try to write something that hopeless. All of our saddest songs have somewhere in them at least a glimmer of resolve. Street Spirit has no resolve. It is the dark tunnel without the light at the end. It represents all tragic emotion that is so hurtful that the sound of that melody is its only definition. We all have a way of dealing with that song. It's called detachment. Especially me; I detach my emotional radar from that song, or I couldn't play it. I'd crack. I'd break down on stage. That's why its lyrics are just a bunch of mini-stories or visual images as opposed to a cohesive explanation of its meaning. I used images set to the music that I thought would convey the emotional entirety of the lyric and music working together. That's what's meant by 'all these things you'll one day swallow whole'. I meant the emotional entirety, because I didn't have it in me to articulate the emotion. I'd crack... Our fans are braver than I to let that song penetrate them, or maybe they don't realise what they're listening to. They don't realise that Street Spirit is about staring the fucking devil right in the eyes, and knowing, no matter what the hell you do, he'll get the last laugh. And it's real, and true. The devil really will get the last laugh in all cases without exception, and if I let myself think about that too long, I'd crack. I can't believe we have fans that can deal emotionally with that song. That's why I'm convinced that they don't know what it's about. It's why we play it towards the end of our sets. It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell every time I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of its meaning, like when you're going to have your dog put down and it's wagging its tail on the way there. That's what they all look like, and it breaks my heart. I wish that song hadn't picked us as its catalysts, and so I don't claim it. It asks too much. I didn't write that song. |

| Ad Noiseam online store updates for last week. |
[Jul. 6th, 2009|02:51 pm] |
New arrivals: | THE MOUNT FUJI DOOMJAZZ CORPORATION - Succubus - CD (Ad Noiseam)
Seductive but perilous, he Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble's new session under the Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation name is a new combination of drones and jazz. Creating sensual, murky and dark atmospheres, ?Succubus? the evolution of this band, with stronger horns and a focus on hypnotic, soundtrack-like material. A deep, dark and yet seductive trip again for the corporation.
|
| MOTHBOY - Beg / Movement - 12" (Ad Noiseam)
Mothboy is back and brought his friends Starkey and Lapsed & Nonnon with him for this return to heavy bass lines and club-filling beats. With a clean but massive A side and a grime-oriented flip, Ad Noiseam's favouritee London heavyweight wrecks subwoofers once again and shows that he's at the top of his games and ready to fill dancefloors.
|
| PLASTIK JOY - 3:03 - CD (n5md)
N5md continues to affirm itself as the North American equivalent to Morr Music and City Centre Offices with this album by Plastik Joy which can be seen as this imprint's shot at everything Múm. Playful, gentle and soft spoken, Plastik Joy's tracks rely on the combination of female and male vocals, sometimes childish melodies and sounds and a very poetic approach to build modest and charming atmospheres. The referrence to Reykjavik in a track title seems to hit the spot, and people into the recent wave of Icelandic material should enjoy this quite a lot.
|
| BELLADONNAKILLZ - Sorry Try Again - CD (Dross Tik)
They're back. The demise of Sublight had left Belladonnakillz without a label, but this band have gone back to their first love with the Toronto Dross:Tik, and aim at "trying again", it seems. A lot less hardcore than before, with more guitars and more 8bit sounds, but, most of all, still armed with their dorky mix of pop ballads and internet 1337 speak, Belladonnakillz are still an unidentified audio object. Love them or hate them, but this combination of naivity and provocation has its charm, and their tunes often prove really addictive. You'll sing that under the shower this summer.
|
| THE OUTSIDE AGENCY - The Easy Money Remix EP - 2x12" (Genosha Recordings)
The Outside Agency one day decided to crowd source a little bit, or, to put it in a nicer and more realistic way, to ask their friends to remix a selection of tracks from their impressive (both in quality and quantity) discography. The cream of the crop of the hardcore and gabber scene are therefore present here to re-interpret tracks by DJ Hidden and Eye-D: Producer, Nosferatu, Mindustries, Ophidian and others turn the Outside Agency tracks into their genres: at times noisiers, often straighter, but always really efficient, tongue-in-cheek and very well produced. Great, as usual with these two.
|
| LOESS - Burrows - CD (Nonresponse)
A compilation of new tracks, remixes and rare tracks, "Burrows" will however have to make do as a new Loess album, since we hadn't heard anything from this NYC duo since their 2006 "Wind And Water". Quite varied, with material ranging from straight up calm electronica to Pole-lique dub material, "Burrows" is from start to finish a laid back, aerial and very clear CD. Mesmerizing, deep and definitely asking for more output from this underrated act.
|
| PROEM - Till There's No Breath - CD (Nonresponse)
I was genuinely surprised by this new Proem album, even though I should have been tipped off by the dark and organic cover art. Two years after his latest effort for Nmd, this musician breaks totally with his IDM past and comes up with a completely ambient and beatless full length album. The atmospheres, while not dark in the industrial sense are somber and meditative, there was definitely some deep thoughts and matters going through Proem's mind when he wrote this. The album is still overall clean, drony and deep, but is clearly aimed at a purely atmospheric setting. Interesting.
|
| UZUL PROD - Travelling Without Moving - CD (Expressillon)
Difficult to describe, but easy on the ear and quite rewarding, the first album by the french band Uzul Prod is an audio trip in the truest sense of the word. With each track named after a city and evoking a particuliar atmospheres through ethnic sounds and vocals, "Travelling without moving" is a precise and powerful mixture of post-rock, dub basses, electronica arrangements and quite a lot of oriental sounding melodies and samples. Original, very interesting, this might be what old fans of Von Magnet have been waiting for for a long time.
|
| NIVEAU ZERO - Dr Doom - 12" (Dub Technic)
Another excellent three tracks from France's Niveau Zero. Dubstep in their tempo and basses, they however have a much harder, drier and epic feeling, and turn their back from the dub elements to integrate very well used vocal samples and strong melodies. This guy is really on to something, and I strongly recommend his current output.
|
Back in stock: | BLACK LUNG - Full Spectrum Dominance - CD (Ant Zen / Tympanik Audio)
Solid. energetic and varied new full length album by Black Lung. Starting off with gritty but massive kicking beats and slowly deviating towards calmer tracks, "Full Spectrum Dominance" is Black Lung on a good day, and in my opinion surpasses its predecessor, 2003's "The Grand Chessboard". It's all more crafted, a bit more complex, and while it might not have the drive of Black Lung's very early release, it has all gained in depth and graininess. Recommended.
|
| VENETIAN SNARES - Sabbath Dubs - 10" (Kriss)
Venetian Snares has changed. Yes, you read well: here is a new record by Venetian Snares which is totally devoid of fast breakcore and post-IDM. On the contrary, Aaron Funk pays here hommage to Black Sabbath with two excellent slow and dub tracks, in which only the vocals are kept from the original songs. Definitely the slowest and most bass-heavy material ever to come out from the Venetian Snares factory, and a lot tastier than anything he's done in a long time. Congratulations to Bong-Ra's Kriss Records for bringing this one out.
|
| ENDUSER - Left - 2x12" (Hymen)
Quite a follow-up to 2006's "Pushing Back", this first album for Enduser since his relocation to the American west coast confirms his taste for down-tempo, more melodic tracks than before, intertwined with hard and banging broken drum'n'bass number. Gone is the relentless sampling, for, just like on "Pushing Back", Enduser invites several talented singers to lay their voices on his incisive beats. Lynn Standafer is definitely the master in his category, and "Left" is unsurprisingly indispensable.
|
| BELLADONNAKILLZ - Perverted And Proud - CD (Dross Tik)
Attention, here is a debut album not to be missed. Belladonnakillz has already been working with Knifehandchop and Panacea, and his debut album is nothing short of a bomb. Mixing gabber beats. Heavy drum'n'bass and the goofy / ravy attitude of the two aforementionened acts, Belladonnakillz signs here a first album combining a very high dose of energy, humor, and catchiness. Definitely the most infectious album of the year so far. Check it out.
|
| V/A - Public Convenience 2 - 12" (Restroom Records)
Four years after the first volume, Restroom Records present a second "Public Convenience" compilation. More varied than the fist one, this one ranges from the hard punk-ish beats of Psykotropp to the noisy beats of Kiew, and from the nice downtempo of Umkra to a very surprising Dead Can Dance-meets-electronic dub by 5xpi (aka Inapt, head of Restroom). A well balanced and well produced compilation.
|
| NOIZE CREATOR - Dying World - 12" (Suburban Trah)
New 12" by Noize Creator. A very good production this time around for the Dresden-based produced and driving force behind Suburban Trash. The beats are pretty noisy and aggressive, the rhythms are broken, but still relatively groovey and efficient. Once again, Noize Creator confirms that his music is an adequate bridge between breakcore and rhythmic noise, and so with a handful of really nicely written tracks. What else could a DJ ask for?
|
| I:GOR - Strike34 - 12" (Strike Records)
New 12" by I:Gor, presenting here the hardest tracks I have ever heard from him. Very well produced, club-oriented hard tracks with a cristalling production and a structure leaning to gabber. This 12" also includes a remix by Noize Creator which could very well become a classic. Violent, energetic and very well done.
|
| I:GOR - The Art Of Distortion - 2x12" + CD (Strike Records)
Tremendously hideous cover for the new double LP by I:Gor, which would have deserved much better. Noisier, harder and less sample-based than before, this "Art Of Distortion" displays this now essential producer on one of his toughest and most angry days, and the album contains but a nod to his d'n'b and hip hop endeavours. Super energetic, dark and hard, this 2x12" also comes with a 19 track CD presenting I:Gor's past releases on Strike Records. To sum up: strong music, important release, but a cover that makes you gauge your eyes out.
|
| DROON - Gluttons vs. Bingers - 12" (Zero71 Recordings)
Droon (aka one of the main organizer of the legendary Breakcore Gives Me Wood parties) is a rude boy, and intends to prove it with this hard and über-dancy new 12". Mashin up pop samples and broken beats in the best Shitmat way, adding a heavy dose of rowdyness, and delivering everything according to the book of "how to create a breakcore club track", he offers here a record which few will be able to resist on the dancefloor.

| PAUL BLACKOUT - Viva La Revolucion - 12" (Hardline Rekordingz)
Another dancefloor-filler from the always underrated Paul Blackout, who delivered with this 2004's "Paul Blackout" a very efficient (and loud) two tracker on which he presents his personal combination of hard drum'n'bass, hardcore beats and metal riffs. A bit more d'n'b than the more recent material from him, but viciously raw, very energetic and just plain great for DJs.
|
| STENDECK - Sonnambula - CD (Tympanik Audio)
Fourth album already for Stendeck. Following the remarked "Faces", "Somnambula" walks a more accessible and almost poppy path. Highly melodic, mid to up-tempo and clear from start to finish, it confirms Stendeck as part of the Displaced-led post-Gridlock school of industrial electronica, but puts this artist among both the straightest and the most playful of the lot. Well produced and not devoid of some powerful, heavier moments.

| EMALKAY - Explicit / Heroics - 12" (Dub Police)
Dub Police does it again, and delivers another of their massive, heavy hitting dubstep 2 tracks, this time from Birmingham Emalkay. While originality might not be the main thing on this record, the highly percussive A side and more melodic B one are pure dancefloor material, and quite on the tough and muscular side of dubstep. Hassle-free DJ material.
|
| MAHANEE & VON D / LIQUID WICKED - S.A.G.E. / Dubwar (Von D VIP Mix) - 10" (Destpub)
Cool, uncommon and surprisingly dub-filled sixth release from France's Destpub label. On the A side of this new 10", Disrupt-collaborator Mahanee and Von D come up with a deliciously gritty and quite up-tempo dubstep-meets-8 bit number (Disrupt fans should take notice). Things get more ganja-influenced with the equally fast but dubbier and straighter B side by Liquid Wicked, which you might use to bring all your dancehall-listening, dreads-wearing friends to purely electronic material. Quite a nice one.
|
| NIVEAU ZERO - Rotor / Cause Of Death - 10" (Destpub)
Another excellent two tracker 10" by Paris's Niveau Zero, who has quickly become quite a favorite over here at Ad Noiseam. His tracks combine very catchy and efficient dubstep with driving fast-paced drums, an acute sense for melodies and well found samples. Quite original and a lot less dub than most UK dubstep, this guy's material is dark, club-friendly but still detailled and varied. To sum up: very recommended.
|
| NIVEAU ZERO - Evil League / Rising Fist - 10" (Destpub)
Attention everbody: über-killer super recommended record ahead: Niveau Zero outdid himself here. "Evil League" is an excellent dubstep track kicking off with great indian string (Bollywood dubstep here we come), and "Rising Fist" answers with an anthemic extremely heavy number supported by distant shouted vocals. As expected from such a description, this is far from your usual middle of the road dubstep here, and is meant to be played over and over. Excellent.

| THE OUTSIDE AGENCY & MINDUSTRIES - Forever Is A Long Time Coming - pic 12" (Genosha Recordings)
Before being turned into a mesh of an horrible movie, the Transformers were an awesome cartoon, worth of being the theme of this heavy picture 12" co-written by Ad Noiseam favorites The Outside Agency and the other hardcore duo Mindustries. The four tracks of this post-gabber hard beats robot fest originate from both acts working together, and the result if an exhilarating, pounding and relentless piece of hardcore as The Outside Agency only know to write: über efficient, massive, and still something that your brain can enjoy as well (unlike the aforementionned movie). Recommended.
|
| FRACTIONAL - Laous - 10" (Angstrecords)
Dating back from only 2006, this debut 10" by Fractional easily positioned this producer as one for hard and noisy breakcore. While they feature some long and interesting melodies, the tracks revolves around concrete-sounding beats, distorted breaks and staccato rhythms (damn, that B2 tracks, which sounds a bt like a grittier Xanopticon, is devastating). Very energetic, efficient and merciless.
|
| NOIZE CREATOR - 12 Long Hours / Part Of The Dead - 12" (Active Underground)
Blood red vinyl for this very dark 12" by Noize Creator, released without much publicity in the second half of 2008. New material by this producer has become quite rare, and this kind of oppressive, old-school / classic breakcore offering from him is quite welcome. Reminding more of acts such as Abelcain or Slutmachine than of Noize Creator's more distorted past, this is a record which could easily have been released on Zhark, and which should make any fan of not-too-noisy but definitely broken and dark breakcore very happy.
|
| NOIZE CREATOR - Shut Up And Dance - 12" (Nasdia)
The title says it all. Noize Creator has been improving his production skills a lot recently. This new 12" on the german label Nasdia tops once again almost everything this producer has done in the past. A bit less noisy than usual, clearer and more percussive, "Shut up and dance" still focuses on the very catchy, raw and syncopated rhythms and beats Noize Creator has been feeding us with for quite some time now. A very solid 12" that should leave its mark. Recommended.
